Nature and Conservation
Mountain hares are larger than rabbits but smaller than brown hares and prefer areas of mixed heather and cotton-grass moorland. Their coat changes colour from brown to white in the winter months, which makes them easier to spot in milder winters, or after the snow has melted, when you may see them zigzagging across the moors.
The National Trust looks after Marsden Moor, in West Yorkshire, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation because of its breeding birds and blanket bog habitat.
The teams are working hard there to reverse historical damage from pollution, overgrazing and wildfires by increasing biodiversity, improving habitats for wildlife, and re-wetting the moorland, reducing the risk of both floods and fires.
